Outdoor Rifle
Summary
Our Outdoor Rifle Program encompasses several outdoor shooting programs, which all involve sports which shoot at paper targets for score, using both high-power and smallbore rifles. These matches are for members and guests of members, and are not open to the public. You must pre-register for these matches on the sign-up sheet on the bulletin board next to the sign-in desk.
Mini Palma
The smallbore Mini Palma is intended to replicate the high power Palma match, which is shot at 800, 900 and a 1000 yards. In the Mini Palma match, targets are scaled to simulate distance. Some match details:
- Distance is 100 yards
- Shooting is from the prone position.
- Consists of 30 shots, loaded singly.
- Ten shots for score at each target, with twenty sighters permitted.
- Time limit is 45 minutes to complete the match target.
- Cost is $7.00.
- Held on the Second Saturday of each month during the match’s season, which lasts from March through November, weather and range conditions permitting.
- Plan to arrive by 8:30AM for check in. Match begins at 9AM.
Smallbore Prone Match
Falls has been hosting a Smallbore Prone match since 2012. Some match detail:
- Match is shot at 50, 100, and 200 yards.
- There are 20 shots fired for each distance, loaded singly, for 60 shots total for the match. Unlimited sighters.
- Time limit is 20 minutes for each distance fired.
- There are two classes: open sights and scoped. Sights must be able to adjust to 200 yards.
- Cost is $7.00
- Held on the fourth Saturday of each month March through November, weather and range conditions permitting.
- Plan to arrive by 8:30AM for check in. Match begins at 9AM.
Smallbore F-Class
F-Class is a shooting sport which originated in 1995. It was intended for those familiar with or interested in long range shooting, and is typically held at 600 to 1000 meters. Since 2019, FTRPA hosts a scaled down smallbore version of this match using targets to replicate distances of 600 and 1000 meters. Some match details:
- May be fired from prone or bench
- A bipod or rifle rest is permitted, with optional rear support.
- Match is shot from 100 and 200 yard distances.
- Each distance is allocated of 20 shots, for 40 shots total, singly loaded.
- Time limit is 30 minutes for each distance.
- Classes are open sights and scopes. The sight or scope must be able to adjust to 200 yards.
- Cost is $7.00
- Held on the fourth Sunday of each month, March through November, weather and range conditions permitting.
- Plan to arrive by 8:30AM for check in. Match begins at 9AM.
High Power
High Power is the oldest match run by the Outdoor Rifle Committee, starting here at Falls in 1993. The original match was an 80 shot Slow Regional Match with two ten minute stages of slow fire prone, two seventy second rapid fire prone, and a sixty second sitting or kneeling stage and a final 10 minute standing slow fire stage. Today we run a fifty shot National Match, shot at 100 yards. Though more experienced shooters can opt for 200 yards with limited positions.
Stages:
- Five minutes is permitted for unlimited sighters at the start of the prone stages.
- Slow Fire, prone, two stages of 10 rounds in 10 minutes. Target is MR-31
- Rapid Fire, prone, 10 rounds in 70 seconds. Target is SR-21
- Rapid Fire, sitting or kneeling – 10 rounds in 60 seconds. SR-1
- Slow Fire, standing – 10 rounds in 10 minutes. SR-1
Other details:
- The AR-15 platform rifle is typically the preferred platform of High Power Shooters, but any rifle capable of rapid fire may be used.
- The club has Garands which may be used if you don’t have your own suitable firearm.
- Up to 56 rounds of 30-06 ammunition is available for shooting the match. Reloads may not be used in club firearms.
- We also have mats, slings and possibly a shooting coat that fits.
- Cost is $5.00. Club ammo will cost extra if you opt to use that.
- Match is held on the fifth Sunday of the month, March through October. Not every month has a fifth Sunday, so be sure to check the calendar.
- Plan to arrive by 8:30AM for check in. Match begins at 9AM.
